PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: DO YOU KNOW WHAT BUTTERFLIES REPRESENT?

Butterflies are a symbol of resurrection, hope, joy, and new beginnings.  It is a symbol of rebirth and a transformation of change: meaning out with the old and in with the new.  Just like a caterpillar must go through several growth and development before it can become a beautiful butterfly, so must we go through several growth experiences in life before we experience our true purpose and get to a place of inner peace in life.  Like the caterpillar, many people have build a cocoon – a bubble or guard - around themselves (and around their hearts) and have not allowed themselves the opportunity to experience love, new things, and to psychologically grow and develop into the person they truly should be.  Just like it becomes necessary for the caterpillar to burst out of its own chrysalis – or cocoon like- surrounding and become the beautiful butterfly that it was meant to be, so must we break out of our comfort zone in order to become the predestined person that we were meant to become.  Just like butterflies go through a life cycle known as complete metamorphosis, so must we if we want to accomplish more than we ever have in our lives thus far.
Caterpillars face a major challenge as they grow because their skin cannot grow with them.  In order for a caterpillar to grow, develop, and change into the beautiful butterfly that it was ordained to become, it must go through five stages of development before it can emerge into its true being.  Finially, it is ready to emerge and reveal itself - or “pupate”- to the world.  A caterpillar must go through these stages (or obstacles) because its original skin that it was hatched with cannot support the massive growth that is needed for it to become a butterfly.  Because of this, it must make a new, larger skin underneath its outer skin.  Then, when it’s ready, it "sheds" the old skin, and the newer, larger skin underneath is exposed, allowing it more room to grow.  From there, the caterpillar transforms itself into a beautiful adult butterfly. But when the butter emerges from its chrysalis or cocoon, it is still not ready to fly quit yet.  It still has to rely on itself.  It must pump fluids from its own abdomen through the veins in its wings, which causes the wings to expand to their full size allowing it to be able to fly high.
So what can we humans learn from the metamorphosis of the caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly?  Well first of all, we must allow ourselves to engage life to the fullest.  We have to take responsibility for our own adult growth and development and stretch into the person that we want to become.  The moral of the story is this:  Something that was once unattractive – the caterpillar – over time developed itself into something marvelous to the human eye.  So this goes to demonstrate to us that with time, self-improvement, dedication, commitment, and diligence, we too can resurrect ourselves and change or make a major transformation or makeover in our lives.
So what do you need to put behind you these days?  What do you need to let go of so that you can develop into the beautiful butterfly that you were meant to be?   After going through some things in life – disappointments, hurts, resentments, setbacks, etc., - I know that you are now ready to put it behind you and experience a new beginning.  Remember, the butterfly had to rely on itself; it had to actually pump fluids from its own abdomen to sustain live to its wings – a necessary component for it to fly.   So when you are feeling down, think of a beautiful butterfly and what it had to go through to become what it is now.

It’s time for you to replenish yourself and take flight today! Start anew: love more, laugh more, and take the time to learn how to develop yourself into what you want to become.
Your rebirth can start today.  Be Blessed!
Your Success Coach,

PERSONAL DEVELOPOMENT: WHAT I LEARNED ON MY JOURNEY TO SUCCESS FROM OPRAH AND ELANOR ROOSEVELT

Two women that I admire very much are Ms. Oprah Winfrey and the late former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt

From Ms. Eleanor Roosevelt I learned, “For our success to be real, it must contribute to the success of others.” Moreover, “You get more joy out of giving to others, and should put a good deal of thought into the happiness you are able to give.” This is why I constructed a business model that provides services that helps others to grow and develop. My passion and purpose in life is to help others realize their dreams.  Ms. Roosevelt also taught me that, “Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only the true friends will leave footprints on your heart.”  She often said, “Ones philosophy is not best expressed in words, it is expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves.”  In other words, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”  It’s time to upgrade your thinking, get rid of the small mindedness, educated yourself, and develop a success mentality. One of the major philosophies that I adopted from Eleanor Roosevelt was her saying that “One of the best ways of enslaving a people is to keep them from education.”  My people were in slavery for a long time and I refuse to be a confined in any way or fashion.  Unfortunately, too many people today are still enslaved by their very own way of thinking.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and many, many others fought for our civil rights and gave their lives so that we do not have to be inferior.  It’s time to make some changes in your life.  It’s time to do your part.  It’s time to remove the bondage!  Take time to expand your mind, take time to develop yourself, take time to read between the lines, take time to gain wisdom.  Take the time to educate yourself and find your purpose in life.  Develop your plan of action.

From Ms. Oprah Winfrey I learned that our destiny is bigger than anything we can ever create by ourselves.  Back in the 1980’s when I was in high school Oprah became instrumental to me because she demonstrated to me that there was indeed a way out and provided a roadmap to follow to live a more prosperous lifestyle.  Because I grew up in a rural area down South and she did too, I knew her success model – with all of its trials and tribulations - was worth emulating.  In choosing to follow in her path, I believed deep down inside that if she could do it, then I could do it too.  She said, “I knew there was a way out.  I knew there was another kind of life because I had read about it.  I knew there were other places and there was another way of being.”
In spite of all that Oprah has gone through she never lost faith.  She said, “What I know for sure is that behind every catastrophe there are great lessons to be learned.  Among the many that we as a country need to get is that as long as we play the ‘us’ and ‘them’ game, we don’t evolve as people, as a nation, as a planet.”   Desiring abundant success and financial independence is not something to be ashamed of.  Oprah instilled in me that “What material success does is provide you with the ability to concentrate on other things that really matter. And that is being able to make a difference, not only in your own life, but in other people’s lives.”  By following her lesson, I have been blessed to be able to purchase a home for my father to live in, and was able to acquire a townhome to assist my younger brother. Are you wondering how we know when we are on the road to success? “You know you are on the road to success if you would do your job and not get paid for it,” at least that’s what I learned from Oprah.  I later realized that the only people who will have a problem with you pursuing abundant success and financial independence are those people who have given up on themselves; and in turn, they will speak negative about you and spit their venom at you – with their cynicism and antagonistic words - as often as you allow them to.  Instead of giving energy to the negative Nelly’s (negative people that is), I chose a long time ago to only focus my attention on feeling love, inner peace, and those things that I wanted to achieve in life (my success plan) and adopted this philosophy from Oprah: “What I know is, that if you do work that you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come.”  I placed that advice at the pinnacle of my success plan and followed it literally.
So I have to ask you the big million dollar question.  Whose advice are you listening too?  Whose footprints or blueprints are you following in?  Have they accomplished some of the things that you want to do in your life?  If the answer is ‘no,’ then he or she may NOT be the right person for you to be listening too at this time.  Let me share a little secret of life with you:  Don’t listen to people with the same problem(s) as you, rather, listen to people who have solutions.   Follow people who have travelled down the road you want to embark upon and can tell you the appropriate turns (success suggestions) to make and what bumps (obstacles) and pot holes (challenges) to avoid.  Success always leaves clues.  Be sure that you are following the right path and not running from your inner fears and sullenness in life.  Oprah enlightened me that “Whatever you fear most has no power; it is your fear that has the power.”
Who are the people that have blessed you or added value to your life?  Why not take a moment to send them a note of gratitude. Be Blessed!

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: DO YO KNOW THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY?

  1. You don't have written goals;
  2. You don't have a vision for your future;
  3. You don't have a success plan;
  4. You're not self-aware of how your action and behavior impacts others; and/or
  5.  You have a true fear of success.

SELF-HELP: ATTITUDES FOLLOW BEHAVIOR

Would you say that you have a "good" attitude or a "bad" attitude?  Attitudes are mental judgments relative to a way of thinking or being; they are beliefs and feelings that predisposes us to react in a particular way to people, things, and events.  These predisposed thoughts and feelings can cause both a positive (optimistic) attitude or a negative (pessimistic) attitude.   The age-old question that comes to mind as I write this post is:  which comes first, attitude or behavior?  By actually the more practical question should be, which should be targeted for change first – attitude or behavior?  As a psychologist, I would recommend that you target changing your behavior first because behavior is easier to change on a large scale than attitude; but the key is consistency!  The consistency principle says that we have a massive amount of influence lying deep within us that directs our actions.  So you must develop a positive mental attitude if you want to progress in your career, your business, in a relationship, or in life!  We must keep in mind that we only need to remember our very own commitment or decision – what we know we should be doing, or the action we decide prior to someone saying something inappropriate to us - and respond consistently no matter who the person is. In social psychology we say that an individual’s behavior is affected by their inner attitudes as well as by external social influences. Accordingly, we usually follow the cognitive dissonance theory.  Without a doubt, our actions do impact our attitude, and vice verse. In order to start changing our attitudes about certain things, we can use the attitude-follow behavior principle.   The attitudes-follow behavior principle has some heartening implications.  Although we cannot directly control all our feelings, we can influence them by altering our behavior. In following this principle, you adopt the mantra that “Changing my behavior will change how I think and how I feel.”  Don’t over analyze it, just do it!

Why do our actions affect our attitude? One explanation is that we feel motivated to justify our actions.  When we are aware that our attitudes and actions do not coincide, we experience tension called cognitive dissonance. To relieve this tension, according to the cognitive dissonance theory proposed by Leon Festinger, we often bring our attitudes into line with our actions.  It is as if we rationalize, “If I chose to do it (or say it), I must believe in it.” The less coerced and more responsible we feel, the more motivated we are to find consistency, such as changing our attitudes to help justify the act.   If we believe that someone does not like us, we will feel dislike from that person and may “act” unfriendly. But when we change the way we think about that person – and treat them with respect in spite of their actions – then we will begin to impact or change their behavior. In fact, let me share a story with you that demonstrate this phenomenon precisely.  I was teaching at a university in Northern Virginia and my particular department hired a new chairperson of the general studies department.  Prior to this individual arriving at the university, I always taught two classes per quarter – a psychology class and a group dynamics class.  Well, all of a sudden I was told by this individual that “There are no classes available for you to teach.”  Of course I was a bit perplexed, as I had been teaching these classes for the past two years at this particular college.  Well, I thought, I’ll just go and teach at another university for next semester.  Then I received a call from the dean of the university inquiring as to ‘why’ he did not see my name on the roster for the upcoming semester and ‘why’ I would not be teaching as the students had a very high regard for me.  For some reason, he was told that my schedule was too busy to teach and that I could not “fit” in the time (I wonder who said that and why?) Of course I did not hesitate to inform him of exactly what had transpired.  He then asked if I would still be available to teach that particular semester and I returned to the university.  Of course, this new chairman of the department continued to demonstrate that she did not care for me.  For example, in meetings, she would often refer to two – three professors and address them as “Dr.’s” and then would turn to me and say Amy (rather than addressing me as Dr. Hymes).  I still showered her with professionalism and respect as she continued on with these types of petty activities.  This went on for over a year – and I continued to show absolutely no reaction to her actions – I made a decision not to allow her to impact me.  But I think what was the clincher to this story was when she “tried” to make a derogatory comment in reference to the release of my new book.  Here’s what happened:  Someone stood up to congratulate me on the release of my book Yes You Can! Reaching Your Potential While Achieving Greatness.  Well she had the audacity to say in front of the individuals, “I see the book didn’t do too well since it’s in paperback already.”  My response was this:  Oh, thank you for noticing the book, it was planned to be released in this format.  However, I’m sorry, I must have missed the title of your book that you wrote and got published.  What is the name of that book?  She replied, I haven’t written a book.  I replied, “I didn’t think so, but when you do decide to make that commitment and get on that level, then please provide your comments on the subject matter at that time, thanks.”  I then smiled at her, turned away, gave a copy of the book to a few associates, and looked at her again, with a smiling face and walked away.  After class that night, she approached me and said “I would love to have the opportunity to read your book” and I again smiled at her and said, “Great!  It’s for sale at the book store, please feel free to go and buy yourself a copy.”  After several years of behaving in this manner, and me ‘deciding’ not to follow her up, she has slowly begun to come around. Now she goes out of her way to have conversations with me and speak to me in a positive manner when it is not necessary.  This goes to demonstrate that we do not have to follow up someone else who has a bad attitude towards us.  We can “choose” to control our attitude and strategically plan our actions in a positive manner.  My Mom use to always say, “Two wrongs do not make it right.”  Do not follow-up bad behavior, instead you must “Be the change you want to see in others” (Mahatma Gandhi).
Remember these two points:

(1)  The cognitive dissonance theory says that we act to reduce the discomfort (dissonance) we feel when two of our thoughts (cognition) are inconsistent.  For example, when our ‘awareness’ of our attitude and our awareness of our actions clash, we can reduce the resulting dissonance by changing our attitudes.

(2)  Your attitude drives your actions, and your actions drive the results you will get. William James, one of the fathers of psychology said it best:   “Sit all day in a moping posture, sigh, and reply to everything with a dismal voice, and your melancholy lingers. …If we wish to conquer undesirable emotional tendencies in ourselves, we must …go through the outward movements of those contrary dispositions which we prefer  to cultivate.”
                                                       ~ William James, Principles of Psychology, 1890

Do you have an attitude or tendency you would like to (or needed to) change? If so follow the attitudes-follow behavior principle starting today.  Work on upgrading your attitude and start to put your positive thoughts into action!  If you want to enjoy a great life headed for a world of abundant success then you must take effective action by upgrading your attitude.  If you can’t do it alone hire a success coach - someone who has already achieved the results you want to attain. If you are not sure how you should act, then model your behavior after someone who is already successful in that particular area.

SELF-HELP: HAVE YOU DEFINED YOUR SUPPORT CIRCLE?

Do you surround yourself with people who give you strength, inspire you, and motivate you to want to do better?  Unfortunately, so many people have as their “core group” individuals (or so called friends and associates) who are negative towards them, resentful and extremely critical of them.   It’s almost like having your ‘enemies’ at your side throughout the day.  Let me define “core group” for you.  These are the people that we speak to or hang around with on a regular basis.  These are the people who we allow to give us their opinions on almost any and everything in our lives.  When it comes to choosing who you let into your “core group” you had better make sure that there is no envy, distrust, bitterness, or latent agenda there.  In other words, make sure that person LIKES you as much as they say they LOVE you.  I always say that it is a big advantage to be cognizant of the fact that a person does not “like you” or care for you because you can make it a point to stay out of their path.  However, when we open up the floodgate and allow individuals into our core circle, we then give them access to our personal feelings - our minds, our hearts,  our thoughts - and they in turn, feel that they can say whatever they please ‘to us’ about us. . … and this is not always a good thing.

Someone who should not be in your inner core circle is a person who:
(1)    Is negative, condescending, talks about others, and don’t have plans for their future.
(2)  Brings back negative gossip to you – on a regular basis- about what others are saying about you.
(3)  Demonstrates time after time that there is a hint of jealously in the relationship.
(4)  Always speaks about limiting thoughts and how things will probably never change.
(5)  Tells you what is not possible for you based on their experiences and that of other people they know.

What you have to do instead is to surround yourself with people who give you strength and inspire you!  Surround yourself with individuals who have “converted” their way of thinking to a positive mindset.  Remember, we should only be focusing on the positive aspects of life.  You should only focus on what you actually want to happen in your life, instead of what you do not want.  So I guess it’s now time to ask you today’s big question, and it is this:  Who are your top 4 – 5 closest friends, associates, coaches, and/or advisers that are active in your life?  In other words, who has access to your ear and your heart ….. whose words, thoughts, ideals, and concepts are you allowing to penetrate your mind?  Who are you aligned with mentally?  Oh, I bet you never thought about that one.  But hear me when I say this:  The people that you allow into your personal circle – friends, family, associates - are the ones who will have a major impact on your future success.  They are the people who will either bring you down, or build you up.  So which do you have?  Do you have negative minded people in your circle that focuses on your weaknesses rather than on what you have become?  Are there individuals in your core circle who always seem to find a way to remind you - on a daily bases- of your shortcomings?  Or, do you have people who inspire and motivate you to keep going in spite of the challenges?  I always say, "You are only as strong as the weakest link in your chain"(your core circle that is).  Accordingly, it is crucial to your future success path that you align yourself with positive minded people and only allow into your “core circle” those individuals who like you as a person and are also on some sort of a journey to success themselves.

Take some time right now and form your core support circle.  Identify 4 – 5 people who will inspire, support, and help you on your journey to success.  Eliminate those people who are critical of you, who are negative thinkers, complainers, stuck in the past and refuse to upgrade their mindsets.  I’m not saying you shouldn’t be friends with these types of people, however, I am advising you that you should not have them in your ear on a regular bases.

My Core Circle:

(2)  _______________________________________________
(3)  _______________________________________________

WHAT IS YOUR MINDSET?

WHAT IS YOUR MINDSET?

Success starts from a prosperous consciousness and positive mindset!  Many people want to change their lives and do something great but they just don’t know how to do it.  A major key to accomplishing great things in life is to develop a positive mindset and a success mentality.   A success mentality is a major foundation for being able to live an abundant lifestyle.  A mindset refers to a set of core beliefs or a way of thinking that affects and impacts our attitude and the decisions we make in life.  Our mindsets usually stem from our past conditioning and the environment we grew up in.  In other words, some people are still acting and behaving in an acceptable manner today because they never learned any better.  To be more precise, they were almost certainly never exposed to developmental opportunities or never taught how to develop a success mindset.   Or perhaps they just refuse to upgrade their thinking.  A person’s mindset may also get formed or shaped by strong religious teachings, military culture, an institutionalized environment, and by the outcome of major negative or positive outcomes in life.
Here are the differences between a negative, pessimistic, and scarcity mindset verses a positive, optimistic, and success mindset.

Pessimistic or Scarcity or Poverty Mindset:
  • Negative and Fear-based
  • Lack or limited focused
  •  Always talking about your deficiencies, or what you don't have
  •  Pervasive nonconstructive or negative thinker
  •  Inflexible
  •  Cynical
  • Poverty conscious
Optimistic or Success or Prosperity Mindset:
  • Prosperity conscious
  • Wealth Builder
  • Enlightened Millionaire
  • Positive thinker
  • Willingness to grow, change, and develop
  • Resilient and more than a conqueror
  • Believe in abundance and the power of infinite possibilities
To be successful you must cultivate a success mindset and plant seeds of faith into your existence.  Words that correlates with a fear-based mentality are: scarcity, limited, poverty, negative thinking, fixed mindset, or crab mentality.  A scarcity or “poverty mindset“ is an attitude or a way of thinking that is said to perpetuate what you lacking because the focus is always on what you do not have rather than what you do. Thoughts and comments such as, "I’ll never be able to afford that," rather than thinking ‘how’ can I afford that.  Or, "I'll never have enough money for that" or “I don’t spend that type of money on myself.”   All of these comments may turn out to be self-fulfilling prophecies.   On the other hand, words that correlate with a success mindset are: prosperity, wealth, limitless, growth, millionaire mindset, infinite possibilities.  With a success mindset, your dreams and desires can be developed through persistence, diligence, hard work, perfect practice, and following a designed plan of action.  With a success mindset, people actually believe in possibilities and believe that they can learn, develop, and change overtime and attain the things in life that they desire.  With the correct mindset – a success mindset - you will be able to program your subconscious mind for prosperity.  Your brain will become turned on for success opportunities and you will be able to learn how to ignite or turn-on this internal switch in your mind that will help you to naturally attract the success you desire.

REMEMBER, SUCCESS STARTS AND ENDS WITH A POSITIVE MINDSET!

So what type of a mindset do you currently have?  Prosperity or Poverty?  It’s never too late to change.  Learn how to develop a positive "success" mindset and be about your business.

WHEN YOU ARE STRIVING TO REACH THE TOP...

.....  you must be willing to do a few things differently than the “average” minded person out there. You must learn how to focus your mind!  I have a few young ladies in my protégé program and I always stress to them that they must always find a way to focus their mind and separate themselves from the herd.  It’s vitally important to accept the fact that if you indeed want to reach a high level of success in your life, you MUST do a few things that the “average” person is not going to be willing to do.  Once you decide that you are ready to get on the journey to abundant success you will need to meditate on all of the things – bad habits – that you will need to eliminate from your life.  You see, when you are striving for a level of copious success - and not everyone is cut out for this level - it becomes imperative that you develop a type of “laser focus” desire for achieving your written goals.  Once you make this decision you cannot allow yourself to be distracted by sidelines or trivial pursuits.  You have to learn to focus your attention, efforts and actions on what you want to achieve in life – the things from your success plan.
Here are some suggestions:
(1)   First work on improving your mental discipline.  Start today by working on the voice inside your head that may be telling you what you cannot do.  Start to work on taming that mental clutter by speaking positive affirmations to yourself.  Here are five affirmations that I want you to start repeating to yourself throughout the day, everyday:
v  I am worthy of success and wealth;
v  I am in the process of changing my mindset and will become whatever I put my mind too;
v  I am emotionally strong, I am beautiful (handsome), I am a giving person;
v  I am in harmony with financial abundance;
v   I am so grateful now that I am a (You fill in the blank).

(2)   Keep your mind focused on what you desire and avoid thinking about what you don’t want.

(3)   Start blocking sources that flood your mind with thoughts of what you do not want in your life.  This could be images, television shows, radio broadcasts, places, and also people.

(4)   Start visualizing the success that you desire!  Imagine in your mind what it would feel like when you start changing for the better and start adopting a new way of thinking – in order to get to the accomplishments that you are desire.

(5)   Be in the here and now; strive for excellence!  Focus on one thing at a time so you can give what you are working on your undivided attention. Do not allow your mind to jump from one unfinished job to another.
When you are striving for a level of high success you must demonstrate it in your attitude and your appearance.  People should be able to detect that there is something different about you:  that you already dress and “look” like the person you want to become; that you are willing to go out of your way to help others; that you are willing to give of yourself to learn from others; that you are willing to volunteer to work for someone (without pay) to gain knowledge and experience. You have to be that person who is willing to go the extra mile.  When you go to work you should be volunteering for additional assignments in order to put yourself around people who you can learn from.  Be willing to help your boss out with some of his/her duties.  Remember, you need to separate yourself from the pack; be willing to do what the “average” person will never do.
These are the actions that will help to get you to the top so much quicker; and the great thing about it is that you will not have to step on anyone’s toes, hurt anyone’s feelings, or take away from anyone else to get what you need.  The only thing you will need to do is to change your mindset and be willing to do more.  Are you willing to step out of the “average” box and step up to greatness?
Be Blessed!
