Are you aware of the fact that the average person uses only about 10% of their brain power? The brain is made up of three main parts: the brainstem, limbic system, and cerebrum, and running through the core of the brain is the reticular activation system (RAS). This RAS main purpose is to filter incoming sensory information and alert the higher brain centers to important events that's important to us.
- The cerebrum is where all of our intelligence and higher order thinking is done.
- The brainstem controls all of our involuntary muscles and functioning like breathing, heart rate, digestion and blood circulation. All of this happens automatically without us even thinking about it.
- The limbic system is the master control center for our emotions and many basic motives; it's the expressive part of the brain. It's mostly responsible for our emotional life because it forms our memories, emotions, and feelings and allows us to have memories of past events and then stores things, good and bad, from your past into your long-term memory. The most intriguing part of the limbic system is the amygdala. Why? Because its primary role in the brain is to keep you safe! It has a long memory for any past events that may have caused you fear, stress, doubt, or worry in your life and can sense when you are out of your comfort zone. When this happens, it will release chemicals called neurotransmitters and hormones to keep you in your comfort zone. This, in essence, will usually cause you to stop trying to do something new, or stop you from trying to change a bad behavior and bring you back to your comfortable state. It's the bridge from our emotions to our cognitive centers. When it is blocked, we start to function from a place of emotions only; which will cause you to act irrationally. The good news is, we can LEARN how to control it by re-training or re-programming our subconscious mind.
As human beings, our brain is led by two minds: the conscious and the subconscious mind. Each has distinct and totally different functions. Our mind works in pictures and our thoughts actually become things. This is why we must learn how to control and “direct” our thoughts. Understand this: it is your mind - your thinking - that determines your success. Your brain is set on auto pilot and hardwired for survival. It wants to keep you safe at all times! Once you understand exactly how the brain works you will be able to “re-program,” “re-train,” and “re-wire” it to focus only on reaching your aspirations, your goals, dreams, and desires.
Think of the brain as a central computer that controls all bodily functions, and the nervous system as the network that relays messages back and forth from the brain to different parts of the body. It does this via the spinal cord, which runs from the brain down through the back and contains threadlike nerves (the peripheral nervous system) that branches out to every organ and every body part. When a message comes into the brain from anywhere in the body, the brain tells the body how to react. It’s like the main frame and the operating system of a computer and it must have an operator to direct the functions.
You can learn more about how to train your brain and make your Subconscious Mind work for you and help you reach your goals by reading Chapter 4 of my personal development guidebook The Prescription To Reach Abundant Success .
